[Review] ATAUDES - 'Merecemos la Extinción' [Argentinian Death Metal]

Ataudes, meaning coffins in Spanish, are a new band from Argentina who play a deeply satisfying brand of dark, old school death metal. 'Merecemos la Extinción' (Translates aptly as 'We deserve extinction' - never more true than right now) is the bands debut full length album and debut release overall.

Following a quick intro track the albums opens with the crushing riffs, furious drums and ravenous feel of 'En Descompocision' which quickly sets the tone for the album. However, far from just a brawling riff-age party, Ataudes are adept at subtle pace changes to keep the flow interesting and in slower passages heap on the groove as well as maintaining their savage intensity. 'Su Santidad' (Your holiness) bolsters first impressions whilst expanding the bands more melodic chops with some deeply satisfying riff-age and bass play. Vocally things are as you'd expect; guttural, powerful and enigmatic!

For me a lot of death metal out stays it's welcome rather quickly. Not so Ataudes. If anything 'Merecemos la Extinción' gains more traction and becomes more gripping as it progresses. Tracks such as the title track and 'Fin de la Existencia' (End of existence) reach new darker depths in terms of atmosphere but also go balls to the wall for blistering pace and adrenaline when the mood takes. It's also somewhat refreshing to listen to a death metal band who focus on the grim realities of our existence rather than the usual tropes of blood and gore. Indeed there is a depressive quality usually reserved for black metal based bands, however whilst the music on offer pulverises it's audience with a thunderous drumming display and maniacal performance on guitar, the overwhelming atmosphere especially in the albums slower parts is one of bleak hostility towards the world.

This is exactly how I like my death metal! If I could draw up a blueprint of the qualities I seek in a death metal band, the blackened sound, dark moods, crippling bass lines and savage riffs, then Ataudes will be the result. A stunning debut from these Argentinian lads and hopefully more to follow. [8.5 out of 10]
