WALDOEDE - 'Volksmythos' Demo (German Black Metal)

Opening with a guitar twang more akin to a Southern Blues song, German Black Metal project Waldoede soon unleash their gloomy lo-fi style and the debut demo 'Volksmythos' (Folk Myth) is firing on all cylinders.

BLOODSABBATH - 'Sabbatic Demon Corpse' [Swedish Black/Death Metal]

From the twisted mind that gave us Natum Abortus comes a new lo-fi black metal project spewing more raw savagery into the world, BLOODSABBATH! This blighted and chaotic year has not slowed down productivity in Sweden and the 'Sabbatic Demon Corpse' demo is the second of three he's released this year!

[Review] LIVE BURIAL - 'Unending Futility' [UK Death Metal]

It is always a heart warming feeling when the area that you live in becomes a seething hot bed of gruesome death metal talent. All hail the North of England then for being a place of gore soaked perversity and barbarity! Newcastle's Live Burial are a band who have grown in presence and talent immeasurably in recent years and this has seen them rewarded with a new deal with Transcending Obscurity Records. Not only that but new album 'Unending Futility' is a sublimely packaged release available as a stunning Digi-Pack (which I have) or on 12" vinyl in a range of colours. There is even a limited edition CD and Vinyl box-set on offer which looks like a highly prized collectable. It would appear that this time Live Burial with TOR have gone all out!

[Review] GOLGI APPARATUS - 'Breach' [Austrian Drone Doom / Post Metal]

I've been pondering this album for a couple of weeks now before putting my thoughts done on this tome, and not for the reasons that you might think. I'm in no doubt that this is an album I enjoy. However, describing what Italian Drone Doomsters Golgi Apparatus offer on their debut album 'Breach' is a challenging task but one I feel ready for having had the album, and especially opening track 'Orca' on repeat ad nauseum!

[Review] ATAUDES - 'Merecemos la Extinción' [Argentinian Death Metal]

Ataudes, meaning coffins in Spanish, are a new band from Argentina who play a deeply satisfying brand of dark, old school death metal. 'Merecemos la Extinción' (Translates aptly as 'We deserve extinction' - never more true than right now) is the bands debut full length album and debut release overall.

[Review] FOUR YEARS LEFT TO LIVE - Nuclear Kampf [US Bestial BM]

If you are on the lookout for a ten minute blast of raw black metal chaos then look no further than USBM war mongers Four Years Left To Live. Part bestial black metal band, part doomsday warning, 'Nuclear Kampf' is a disheartening peek into the apocalyptic waste lands of our collective future.

[Review] Fimbulþul - 'The Spectre and the Lunar Gate' [Icelandic Dark Ambient / Dungeon Synth]

Call this a flash review if you like, of a little something that caught my fancy today. A single track release on Bandcamp from Icelandic one man dark ambient project Fimbulþul, 'The Spectre and the Lunar Gate' encapsulates for me everything that is great about Iceland.

[Review] STARSCAPE - 'Pilgrims' EP [Swedish Heavy Metal]

If you like to discover new heavy metal bands who stay close to the 1980's roots whilst forging modern sounds, then two countries excel at producing mind blowing talent. Firstly the UK [Amulet, Terminus, Lucifer's Chalice] and secondly Sweden. [In Solitude, Enforcer, Portrait, RAM] Hailing from the latter, Starscape are a band who through their debut EP 'Pilgrims' are set forge their path into the above list of juggernaut heavy metal bands with global renown.

[Review] PESSIMIST - 'Holdout' [GERMAN THRASH!]

Friday night has arrived after a long and boring week at work. So here I am sat in my man-cave with my headphones on listening to the new Pessimist album whilst fooling around on Need for Speed when suddenly it happens! Around me the world ceases to exist. There is only me, a super charged Audi drifting like a pro and the thundering thrash riffs bludgeoning my ears, and as I developed a serious case of tunnel vision all of this synced into one harmonious experience of sound and speed. In that moment I felt truly glorious as the music washed over me in a way that I have not felt for quite a while. Still, enough fanciful musings. It's time to take a deeper look at 'Holdout', the third full length offering from German thrashers Pessimist!

[Review] IN ABYSSUM - 'Apocalypsis Infernum' Demo. [Swedish Black Metal]

In order to appreciate this demo one must first cast aside preconceived ideas about how a music demo should be structured. Rather than coming at this as a fluent musical recording, try to experience it as an example of savage, unadulterated aural carnage. Opening this two track whirlwind of chaos is 'In Abyssum', which isn't what i'd describe as a song, more a collection of psychotic vocals growls, screams, howls, coughs and ravings, melded together with eerie, suspenseful synth work, rhythmic, primal drums and ear splitting, anarchic guitars. This isn't so much music as it is noise, and I truly mean that as a compliment. Feeding of influences such as Abruptum and Mordor, as well as other more experimental music and horror soundtracks, (You can definitely hear some Carpenter in there) the first half of this demo feels like being plunged into the darkest depths of a schizophrenics psyche.

[Review] WYNTER MYST - 'End of an Era' EP [UK Black Metal]

You would be extremely hard pressed to find a physical copy of this little gem knocking around anymore, despite being released only a few short months ago. That alone speaks to the quality of work and high regard that Steve Blackwood finds himself in. Being a cornerstone of UK black/folk metal group Old Corpse Road is one thing, but delve deeper into things and you’ll find a series of impressive side projects and one man bands from Arcane North to Blood Countess, Peasant to Cave Dweller. Now to be added to this esteemed list is Wynter Myst and a debut EP in ‘End of an Era’ that is superbly crafted and pleasantly atmospheric.
