[Review] STARSCAPE - 'Pilgrims' EP [Swedish Heavy Metal]

If you like to discover new heavy metal bands who stay close to the 1980's roots whilst forging modern sounds, then two countries excel at producing mind blowing talent. Firstly the UK [Amulet, Terminus, Lucifer's Chalice] and secondly Sweden. [In Solitude, Enforcer, Portrait, RAM] Hailing from the latter, Starscape are a band who through their debut EP 'Pilgrims' are set forge their path into the above list of juggernaut heavy metal bands with global renown.

Recently somebody made the point to me that some bands release EP's that should really fall into the album category, so it's refreshing to see Starscape dish out a two track EP to announce their presence to the world. Opening with 'Pilgrims of the Stars', and a quick flurry of old school riff-age merges with a satisfying melody before harder, more focused lead guitar work and groove drenched bass play set the pace. Vocalist Per-Olof Göransson could hold his own in many a classic rock / progressive rock band from the 1970's, and interestingly the prog rock influence doesn't end their as multi-instrumentalist Anton Eriksson [Kaunaz / Meadow's End] likes to moonlight with some pleasingly placed keyboard work, on top of his excellent guitar solos, drumming and soothing bass play! 'Pilgrims' is much more than a collection of cool solos and bass play though, and their song writing is of a level that this 13 minute and 45 second EP sets them apart from many bands as they take you on a journey through the stars and the heavens, from a doomed homeworld to setting up a new colony. This is very much a concept EP!

I love a good bass player! I know bassists are the butt of many jokes but for me the best bands have the very best bass players. From start to finish 'Colony' has a rhythmic bass line that gives me a warm glow inside! Couple this with more smile inducing vocal and guitar work as well as a colossal keyboard solo and you are onto a winner! In truth I'd say this EP would feel more at home being thought of in the same terms as many 70's releases and the progressive rock influence especially pleases me. Easily one of the heavy metal releases of the coming decade and one I heartily suggest you experience. [8 out of 10]
